What is the potential for ecomomic development of the coast, the dunes and the inner dune zone of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area?

Amsterdam's ambition is to transform itself into an internationally competitive European metropolitan area by 2040. In that context, the Chamber of Commerce in Amsterdam asked LAgroup to write an inspiring vision of the development potential of the coastal area, the dunes and the inner dune zone of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, an area stretching from Wijk aan Zee to Zandvoort. For this project we explored the rich history of the region and investigated the current tourism market. We then analysed relevant trends and reviewed developments in other coastal areas in the Netherlands and abroad. We used the findings to prepare a SWOT analysis and identify several development options based on the authenticity, modest scale and natural beauty of the area. The resulting profiles of the landscapes and the associated tourism products were classified under the headings 'pleasant diversion' on the coast, 'outdoor activity' in the dunes and 'comfort and culture' in the inner dune zone.
