| Together with Malta, the Netherlands can again nominate a European Cultural Capital in 2018. A small group of campaigners suggested that Almere should put itself forward as a candidate for the title of Cultural Capital. In response to this public initiative, the city council sought independent external advice on whether Almere should seek the nomination as European Cultural Capital in 2018. |

LAgroup produced a strategic report with a thorough analysis of the advantages and disadvantages for Almere of campaigning to become the Cultural Capital in 2018. The report analysed the benefits and other effects of being designated as a cultural capital as well as the potential and the pros and cons of Almere seeking the nomination. On the basis of that analysis, we made recommendations about whether Almere should be a candidate and, more importantly, if so what steps it should then take. Our conclusion was that Almere has a good chance of becoming the Cultural Capital. It has six exceptional and unique trumps that other cities do not possess. The municipality's chances of becoming the Cultural Capital will be determined mainly by how it plays those trumps. First and foremost, Almere must pursue its ambition and play its trump cards with conviction.
