Does the ATCB perform the function it should in terms of providing information? And what reference material is available on theme years organised by competing European cities?

The Economic Affairs department of the city of Amsterdam wanted to agree on performance targets with the Amsterdam Tourism and Convention Board (ACTB) and assess whether the ATCB achieved them. To assess ATCB's publicity function, LAgroup evaluated four information channels: the tourist offices, telephone, e-mail and the requests received by mail. Each channel was assessed on how easy it was find, courtesy, service, information received, waiting time /speed of response and language skills. In addition we compared theme years in the cities of Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Dublin, London, Paris and Vienna between 2002 and 2008. We specifically reviewed Van Gogh 150 (Amsterdam 2003), Architecture + Design (Amsterdam 2004), Rembrandt 400 (Amsterdam 2006), Mozart 250 (Vienna 2006), Gaudi 150 (Barcelona 2002) and Antwerp MODE 2001. Our study led to recommendations to improve the information function and the use of theme years.
