In 2010, LAgroup conducted its third survey of the impressions of visitors and non-visitors of cities in the Netherlands. As in 2006 and 2002, Maastricht and Amsterdam had the greatest appeal for tourists. Three medium-sized historic cities were in the following group. 's-Hertogenbosch was popular because of its lavish lifestyle, Nijmegen is associated with the sociable atmosphere during the Four Days Marches (Vierdaagse) and Groningen enjoys a reputation as a vibrant student city with an interesting cultural life. The respondents felt that shopping was the most appropriate activity in all of the cities. The survey showed that a number of cities have succeeded in translating the qualities they possess in the eyes of tourists into an appealing image. Others still have work to do. We used the findings to make a number of specific recommendations for each of the cities.
